Is Jacksonville, NC Worth Visiting? Why I Keep Going Back

I used to think Jacksonville, North Carolina, was just a military town I’d pass through on my way somewhere else. My first visit was actually a harrowing late-night emergency vet trip with my sick puppy, so sightseeing was the last thing on my mind.

But after 3 fun trips to Jacksonville, both solo and with my family thanks to Visit Jacksonville NC, I’m happy to admit I had it completely wrong.

I’ve danced alongside locals during the Onslow Veterans Pow Wow, watched my daughter play veterinarian at Zing Zumm Children’s Museum, and discovered a green sea turtle nesting site during a family beach outing at North Topsail Beach. Don’t even get me started on the absolutely delicious eats along the International Food Trail that have me driving over an hour on weekdays for dinner.

What surprised me most wasn’t just how much there was to do, but how connected I felt to the community, both within and outside the military.

So, is Jacksonville, NC worth visiting? Absolutely, especially if you’re into military history, fun family adventures, international food, and discovering places that deserve more attention than they get.

Here’s why Jacksonville went from somewhere I never planned to visit to somewhere I keep coming back to.

There is definitely no shortage of things to do in Jacksonville, NC, but what I love most is how easily you can shape a visit around what you want from the trip.

After visiting both solo and with my family, I can honestly say I’ve experienced a little bit of everything.

From quiet moments of much-needed relaxation at Coastal Massage and Wellness to interactive museum fun with my youngest daughter at Zing Zumm, I’ve experienced a little bit of everything. Throw in Rock the Block, where we danced until we couldn’t dance anymore, and Jacksonville has given me plenty of reasons to keep coming back!

A Relaxing Solo Escape

My first 2-day solo trip to Jacksonville started with relaxation at Coastal Massage and Wellness .

There I had clearing energy work, a deep tissue massage that surprisingly eliminated my chronic pain (for a while), a relaxing facial, and salt therapy that left me feeling like I could breathe again. It was exactly the kind of reset I needed.

Of course, the trip wouldn’t be complete without good food. I had some of the best Mediterranean food I’ve eaten in North Carolina at Marrakesh, dining on warm grape leaves, savory lamb chops, and of course, Turkish coffee and baklava for dessert.

I couldn’t move afterwards, but I was in heaven.

During a family weekend to Jacksonville, we stayed at Home2 Suites, where the spacious rooms saved our sanity and the indoor pool was a hit with the kids.

My youngest, who was 6 at the time, had plenty of opportunities for imaginative play at Zing Zumm Children’s Museum of Jacksonville.

She pretended to heal sick animals at the veterinarian office (ironic), predicted the forecast as a TV weatherperson, and reset in the sensory room.

With North Topsail Beach less than an hour away, we made a day of it using the Mobi-Mats to access the beach, discovering a green sea turtle’s nest, and building ALL of the sandcastles.

The access to the beach was my favorite part because I could focus on the fun instead of the logistics of trying to walk across the beach as an amputee.

Don’t Overlook the Events

Some of my favorite Jacksonville memories didn’t come from visiting an attraction at all, but from joining in and becoming part of the community at some of the events hosted by the city of Jacksonville.

My daughter and I danced our hearts out at the silent disco during Rock the Block where I had to remind my daughter about the indoor pool she begged to play in that night to get her to leave. Another time we visited, we learned about the culture and legends of the tribal nations of Native Americans and even joined the giant circle dance at the Onslow Veterans Pow Wow.

Jacksonville hosts events throughout the year, including Jacksonville Jamboree, Rock the Block, the Marine Corps Half Marathon, and the Onslow Veterans Pow Wow, so it’s worth checking the event calendar when you’re planning your visit so you don’t miss out.

Follow the International Food Trail

And then there’s the food.

I haven’t made my way through every restaurant on Jacksonville’s International Food Trail yet, but I’m working on it. From the Japanese flavors at Wasabi Japanese Sushi and Cuisine to the fragrant spices at Marrakesh, Jacksonville has given my family plenty of reasons to come back when we’re craving something different.

I never expected a military town to become one of the places my family thinks about when we want delicious international food, but here we are.

And considering I’ve driven over an hour on a weekday just to grab café de olla from Chicano’s Street Kitchen in Jacksonville, I’d say the food alone is worth making the trip.

For History Lovers: Marines, Carolina Museum of the Marine, + Lejeune Memorial Gardens

When you think of what Jacksonville, North Carolina, is known for, you probably think of Camp Lejeune, the largest Marine base on the East Coast of the United States.

Camp Lejeune is set up like a standard military base with checkpoints and gates around it, so make sure to pay attention to signs so you don’t accidentally enter. Otherwise, you’ll have to turn around (this may or may not have happened to me a few times).

The history of the Marines is undeniably ingrained in the community of Jacksonville. During my first solo trip to Lejeune Memorial Gardens, the impact of the history and dedication to our country left me in tears.

I learned things I never knew before, like the tragedy of the Beirut bombings, and read the names on the glass wall of the Onslow County Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I went in knowing very little about some of these events and left with a much deeper appreciation for the history that’s such a big part of Jacksonville.

For a deeper look at the Marine Corps itself, the Carolina Museum of the Marine takes you into the history of what it means to become a Marine.

During our family getaway to Jacksonville, we explored all the exhibits cover everything from recruitment to the wars and conflicts Marines have been part of to interactive elements like carrying the packs that Marines carry during training that can help younger visitors connect with what they’re seeing.

What I appreciated about visiting both the museum and Lejeune Memorial Gardens was how differently they approached the history. The memorial gardens gave me a place to remember and reflect, while the museum helped me understand more about the people, history, and community behind those memorials.

You don’t have to be a military history buff to appreciate this side of Jacksonville. Understanding the city’s connection to the Marines helped me appreciate the community even more.

Jacksonville isn’t trying to be the Outer Banks or the Blue Ridge Mountains, but it doesn’t have to be. It has its own unique personality, shaped by its military community, family adventures, mouth-watering food, fun-filled events, and proximity to some of North Carolina’s best beaches.

And that’s exactly why I think Jacksonville, NC, is worth visiting!

I’ve now visited 3 times, and every trip has given me another reason to come back. If you’ve been overlooking Jacksonville, NC, like I once did, it’s time for you to book the hotel and your weekend trip today.
