8 Things to Do in Danville, VA Worth the Weekend Trip

You know those places you never planned to visit but fell in love with anyway? That’s Danville, Virginia for me — family-friendly small town charm, historic buildings full of character, history that you won’t find in textbooks, and an outdoor scene that leaves you never wanting to go inside ever again.

I spent 2 days in Danville, Virginia with the Visit SoSi team and other creators exploring everything the town had to offer from local restaurants to science museums to Civil Rights history and more.

I had way more fun in Danville than I expected, from hunting for giant animal statues downtown to learning about the city’s Civil Rights history and even sitting inside a race car. Below you’ll find my favorite things to do in Danville, VA for a weekend getaway, plus a few nearby stops that were definitely worth the drive.

1. Riverfront Park

When we drove by Riverfront Park, I immediately squealed in joy because there is a giant otter on the playground. If you know me by now, I am a sucker for all things cute. Not only is the giant otter on the playground, but also part of the playground too!

The visit to the park was nothing short of magical. When you park on the gravel road next to the playground, you have the Dan River with the Dan River Falls to your left with the playground and park to your right. You can also get a bird’s eye view of the area from the scenic river overlook just beyond the playground!

The Dan River isn’t just a part of the outdoors, but an activity as well where you can wade, play, kayak, and more. While I didn’t want to risk my balance on a rock in the middle of a river on a dizzying hot day there, some of my companions hopped from rock to rock to get the perfect view of the falls.

I would plan about an hour here if you just want to walk along the river, check out the overlook, and let the kids play. If you want to kayak, wade in the crystal-clear water, or spend more time outdoors, you could easily make a whole afternoon of it.

A beautiful day calls for being outside and what better way to spend it by exploring downtown Danville and discovering animals along the way?

The SoSi Safari is an interactive art and architecture scavenger hunt through Downtown Danville. While the animals are frozen in time as statues, that doesn’t make the safari any less of an adventure when you are racing to see who sees the animals first.

The whole safari is an easily walkable 1 mile trek through Downtown Danville. The best part? After taking pictures (for cuteness and evidence), you can present them at any of the participating businesses for a prize and bragging rights!

My favorite stop? The snails hiding in an alley next to the big red elephant. They’re easy to miss if you get distracted by the gargantuan cuteness of the elephant, but you just need to look up to find them!

Personally, I loved this as a way to explore Downtown Danville without feeling like we were just aimlessly walking around. I would give yourself about an hour for the safari, longer if you plan to stop at local shops and restaurants along the way. You can download the SoSi Safari guide here.

3. The Danville Science Center

Hands-on museums are my favorite, whether I am traveling with kids or solo. Blame it on the big kid in me, but I love science museums where I can experiment, discover, and play while learning something new.

The inside of the Danville Science Center features two levels of discovery and learning, an immersive learning experience in the dome watching films, the butterfly garden, and the 19th century train station with a decommissioned caboose to explore.

We only had about an hour here, but I could have easily spent all day dodging rain drops, testing my strength, running on the hamster wheel of speed, or praying that a butterfly graced me with its presence.

One hour was definitely not enough for me. I would plan at least three to four hours here, especially if you are visiting with kids or want time to see a Dome show without rushing through the exhibits.

4. River District Social

Another great rainy-day activity or night on the town is the River District Social! You can drink and snack while trying your hand (badly) at indoor golf, mini bowling, pool, and more!

Phoenyx swings a golf club toward a ball on a green hitting mat inside the virtual golf simulator at River District Social in Danville VA. A large projection screen shows a digital golf course and the message "Ball not detected. Please place on hitting mat." as part of the interactive game.

I quickly realized why I never play golf when I failed to hit the ball when teeing, not once, but twice.

The mini bowling wasn’t much better since my mind and body failed to sync and realize the ball is much smaller therefore MUCH more airborne if I throw it down the lane with full force.

Save River District Social for a rainy afternoon or after dinner when you still want something fun to do but your feet are officially done sightseeing for the day.

It’s perfect for families with older kids, groups of friends, or anyone like me who enjoys being wildly overconfident about their mini bowling abilities (with absolutely nothing to back it up).

5. Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History

I adore old architecture and fun facts, but I usually steer clear of traditional museums and history if only because school made them so dry that going on my own volition is not ideal.

A recreated civil rights era lunch counter at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History features red vinyl stools chrome bases and a red and white checkered floor. Historic photographs documents and an exhibit panel titled "Unequal Cities" surround the counter to interpret the history of segregation and sit in protests in Danville.

When I say that the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History captivated my heart and soul, bringing me to tears, that is not something that happens lightly.

The devastating yet empowering history of Danville during the Civil Rights movement moved me.

It made the Civil Rights movement come alive in ways I had never seen it before with retellings of Bloody Monday and the brave souls behind it.

My respect for the culture and history of Danville goes beyond words.

A visit to Danville isn’t complete without learning the backstory of the pivotal role it played during the Civil Rights movement.

If you only have time for a few things in Danville, I would make the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History one of your stops. Give yourself at least an hour or two because this is not a museum I would rush through, especially once you reach the exhibits about Danville’s Civil Rights history.

The indoor arena at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham, VA has a large dirt floor surrounded by white fencing and rows of metal bleachers beneath a high exposed beam ceiling. Sponsor signs line the far wall including "Spaulding Equipment Company" and "Farm Credit" while larger signs read "Last Mile Gang" and "English". The spacious covered arena hosts agricultural and equestrian events and offers another option for things to do in Danville VA.

6. Check Out What’s Happening at Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex

I am going to be completely honest: I would not drive 30 minutes outside of Danville just to see the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex when there aren’t any events planned for the day.

We visited while the complex was empty. While I could see how massive the space was, the real reason to come here is for one of their many fantastic events.

Check the calendar before your trip because they host Farmer’s Markets, rodeos, indoor motocross races, concerts, festivals, and more. If something fun lines up with your weekend, then I would absolutely add it to your itinerary.

7. Virginia International Raceway (VIR)

Don’t come for me, I KNOW the Virginia International Raceway isn’t in Danville, but rather Alton / Pittsylvania County 23 minutes away. However, it deserved a mention due to its close proximity to Danville combined with the fact that it is an epic adventure in and of itself.

Our tour may have gotten rained out during our behind-the-scenes tour of the Virginia International Raceway, but that didn’t take away from the excitement of it.

Phoenyx sits behind the wheel of a race car at Virginia International Raceway near Danville VA with a red roll cage surrounding the drivers seat. She smiles through the windshield while exploring the interior controls of the track prepared car.

The tour brought us around various public spaces like the tracks themselves, but we also got to hang with some racers and sit inside the cars.

My experience was truly special where I got to sit in the race car, start it, and rev the engine.

Now the only thing to do next is to race on the track one day!

I would especially recommend VIR if you love motorsports or have always wanted to experience racing up close.

Since it is about 23 minutes outside of Danville, I would make this a half-day side trip rather than trying to squeeze it between downtown attractions.

8. Caesar’s Virginia

Think Caesar’s Virginia is all gambling and slot machines? Think again!

A table at Ramsays Kitchen inside Caesars Virginia in Danville VA is covered with several plated dishes including glazed fried chicken topped with sliced jalapenos and green onions. A large black plate in the foreground holds a dessert with bright orange fruit and sauce while steak and other entrees fill the table behind it.
Delicious spread of food at Ramsay’s Kitchen in Caesar’s Virginia in Danville, VA

While there is gambling galore, Caesar’s Virginia has some of the best food I have had all year at Ramsay’s Kitchen, the convenience of caffeine at Starbucks, a gorgeous pool, and events for everyone.

I am a foodie through and through. So when I heard that we were going to Caesar’s, my heart screamed for Ramsay’s Kitchen.

They surprised us with handcrafted cocktails, signature dishes, and in-depth notes that any foodie would enjoy.

A blackjack dealer at Caesars Virginia in Danville VA reaches across a green felt table while teaching players how to play. Colorful casino chips sit near the edge of the table with large windows and brick smokestacks visible behind the dealer.
Learning blackjack at Caesar’s Virginia

Blackjack was on the table too, albeit with fake money. I was rolling in the dough, on Lady Luck’s side, until I wasn’t. Alas, my poor (fake) wallet was wiped by getting too confident. The best part? I could ask for more chips in the $500 variety.

Will I gamble my real money? Never. Will I bet it all when it’s fake money? Of course.

Even if gambling is not your thing, I still think Caesars is worth it for dinner, drinks, an event, or a night out. For me, Ramsay’s Kitchen was the real reason to go, while the fake-money blackjack was just the chaotic cherry on top.

Ready to explore Danville, Virginia?

Danville was one of those places I visited without knowing what to expect and left already planning how I could come back.

Between walking Downtown Danville looking for giant animal statues, taking in the gorgeous vistas along the Dan River, learning about the city’s Civil Rights history, eating ridiculously good food, and somehow ending up inside a race car, there was way more to fill a weekend than I expected.

And apparently I have no choice but to return because my 7 year old is still deeply offended that I saw the giant otter at Riverfront Park without her.

If you are looking for a weekend getaway with small town charm, history, outdoor adventures, and plenty to do without feeling like you need another vacation after your vacation, Danville deserves a spot on your list. There are so many things to do in Danville, VA that you may even have to come back twice!

We stayed at the locally-owned boutique Bee Hotel during our trip, which also puts you right in Danville for exploring the area. And yes, staying at the Bee Hotel means you can technically tell everyone you slept like a queen bee because facts.
