A Weekend in Blowing Rock for Two (or Just You)
The Blue Ridge Mountains have always been my safe space to escape from the day to day grind to recharge and reset.
Whether it was making core memories chasing fireflies with my grandpa at our mountainside cabin or accidentally hiking a red trail for a view from Flat Rock proving that I am so much more than my disabilities.
Accessibility doesn’t always mean a beachfront villa. No, it can mean a breathtaking view of The Blowing Rock while listening to legends of magic and love. Accessibility is about meeting people where they are in a way that makes sense for them.
The town of Blowing Rock does that and more by continually making strides to be an experience and haven for all visitors.
Whether you’re going solo or with your favorite person, this 3 Day Accessible Weekend in Blowing Rock Itinerary is exactly how I’d map out a weekend of adventure, relaxation, and accessibility without the usual travel stress.
Day 1: Chetola Fly Fishing and BRAHM

Morning
Make your way into the picturesque town of Blowing Rock to grab a hearty southern breakfast at Social on Main before starting your day.
Don’t let the charm of this small town eatery get away from you.
You can taste the love and dedication that the owner, Tim Knight, has put into every dish since mastering his art of cooking since the age of 12.
For Tim, Social on Main isn’t just another restaurant, it’s his calling and passion which brings his dishes to life.
After fueling up, get your waders and line ready for a day of trout fly fishing with the Orvis certified Chetola Fly Fishing.
Didn’t think fly fishing was an accessible activity? Think again!
Chetola will work with you whether it be balance, endurance, or mobility aids to make sure that you can be reeling in Speckled Trout and maybe even Rainbow Trout in no time!
Imagine my surprise when I hooked not one, not two, but THREE fish over the short course of three hours with expert guidance from Quinn!
Midday
Rest and reset at the Storie Street Grille after building up your appetite fishing.
Storie was probably my favorite restaurant visiting Blowing Rock during this trip because it catered to my sensory sensitivities with its low lighting and reduced noise as well as my new gluten sensitivities.
If you truly want to get a taste for all things southern while also staying gluten free, order the southern sweet tea, fried green tomatoes, and shrimp and grits. Don’t forget to save room for dessert with their flourless chocolate torte that is to die for!
Take the afternoon slow (because you’ve earned it) with a self-guided wander through the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum—locals call it BRAHM.
Inside, you’ll find exhibits that spotlight the kind of art and history that actually makes you want to read the placards to discover what it’s all about.
The best part? The exhibits change often, so there’s always something new to see—even if you’ve been before. One month it’s contemporary Appalachia, the next it’s vintage quilts that somehow make you emotional. Don’t question it.
And if you’re around on the right day, check out their weekly mindfulness meditation or afternoon art club. Whether you’re here to zen out or get paint under your nails, they’ve got you covered.
Their attention to accessibility is amazing too with portable, collapsible chairs for use in the museum and plenty of space and seating for every visitor.
Evening
Get to know the roots of true Appalachian cooking at The Speckled Trout in Blowing Rock.
Once a 1950s gas station, this charming spot has transformed into a haven where the heart of the kitchen beats with community and heritage.
Their menu is a love letter to the region, featuring dishes like fresh mountain trout, soup beans, and hoecakes, all crafted with locally sourced ingredients that tell a story of the land. The beverage selection is equally thoughtful, spotlighting terroir-driven libations, from home-grown beers and ciders to wines from small producers, offering a true taste of place.

Walk off dinner with a relaxing stroll around Bass Lake Trail.
Though it is unpaved, it is perfect for those with wheelchairs or strollers with very little incline in totality at a whopping 16 feet, one mile, and 18 minutes from start to finish.
And the perfect finishing touch is to end the day checking into the brand new Embers Hotel in downtown Blowing Rock.
The high end, sophisticated touches balance chic interiors with the cozy comforts of a mountain stay.
Walking into the lobby, you feel instantly relaxed with the fireplace next to the reading and board game area to the stylish bar and restaurant on the other side.
Once checked in, you walk into your room which is beyond spacious and decked out in complete luxury.
From the bath sets of Grown Alchemist, a mini fridge, robe and slippers, and even a balcony you can sit on to enjoy your evening drink while overlooking the town of Blowing Rock.
The Embers is inclusive and accessible for every guest with wide hallways, an elevator, rooms with enough space to navigate in a wheelchair, and even gluten-free options at their restaurant!
Day 2: Sky Valley Zip Tours and Westglow Spa
Morning
Wake up refreshed and ready for an epic day ahead starting with a slow and delicious breakfast at The Embers Restaurant.
From fresh fruit parfaits to savory biscuits and gravy, they will have something tasty for every traveler.
My personal favorite? The Embers Classic was perfect for a day full of adventure with its classic eggs, potatoes, bacon, and gluten-free toast. Pair it with coffee and OJ and you’re set!
Once your belly is full and mind awake (thanks caffeine!), you are ready to fly through the trees with Sky Valley Zip Tours!
While zip lining isn’t the most accessible activity that you can try, it is absolutely worth a mention in my book as they will do their best to accommodate and accessibility needs like my amputee status and prosthetic!
Whether it’s taking its patrons up the steep inclines on their side-by-sides or slowing down the pace, the team at Sky Valley is beyond compassionate and makes a day with them one to remember. They had me thrown back to the days of Blue Steel and glorious puns while laughing all the while.
Sky Valley’s roots run deep—since 1946, they’ve been more than just a summer camp. For over 60 years, they ran traditional summer programs for kids and adults with special needs, creating a space where everyone was not just welcomed, but genuinely seen and celebrated.
That legacy of inclusion still echoes through everything they do today, from ziplining to community impact—proof that adventure doesn’t leave anyone behind.
Midday
After getting your heart rate back to baseline (or close enough), make your way to Blowing Rock Brewing—because nothing pairs with post-adrenaline exhaustion like carbs and craft beer.
Housed in a historic spot since 1920, this place isn’t just leaning on charm—it’s serving up legit culinary creativity with some of the best local craft beer you’ve ever tasted.
The menu reads like a chef dared themselves to outdo pub food as we know it. We’re talking bison burgers, Southern fried chicken sandwiches to rival your grandmother’s cooking, and even a portobello mushroom melt that has you thinking vegetarians don’t have it that bad.
Wash it down with a small-batch brew—maybe the Cloud Rise Hazy IPA if you’re feeling citrusy, or the Big Chocolate Porter if you want dessert and a buzz in one glass.
If you’re anything like me, I am absolutely beat after a couple days of exploration and fun.
That’s when the Westglow Spa was calling my name.
The Signature Bamboo Massage combines the benefits of bamboo with heat and massage to make your muscles feel brand new.
Bordering on making me fall asleep, it was extremely difficult to want to leave the massage table even if it was to move next door to get a facial.
Having sensitive skin has made me extremely nervous about trying anything new on my skin, especially facial services. So when I was booked for a very new, very techie type of facial, my body was on high alert.
But the Glo2Facial Treatment completely reset my skin to baby-softness and clearness that I haven’t been able to achieve since the age of 4.
I left with a renewed sense of hope that maybe I could be beautiful without makeup and for that, I will forever be grateful.
Westglow Spa is currently under renovations to make their spa experience even more accessible for every guest. Some of my favorite inclusions were scent-free showers (the others were aromatherapy based) and adjusting the services to each person’s specific needs.
Evening
Wind down your day with a farm-to-table dinner at Restaurant at Gideon Ridge, where the views are just as unforgettable as the food.
Tucked into the mountainside with only 30 seats, this intimate spot feels like you’ve stumbled onto a hidden gem—one that just so happens to serve beautifully plated, locally inspired dishes that change daily based on what’s fresh and in season.
Every bite feels intentional—like someone actually cared about flavor and didn’t just toss microgreens on top and call it a day.
If the weather plays nice, ask for a table outside. The view over the Blue Ridge Mountains is the kind that makes you stop mid-sentence and just take it all in.
It’s peaceful, it’s scenic, and it somehow makes dinner taste even better.
Fair warning though: this place is popular. Reservations open at 12pm, 14 days in advance, and they disappear faster than you’d think. So set a reminder, prep your clicking finger, and claim your spot—you won’t regret it.
After dinner, retreat back to the comfort of your plush bed of The Embers.
Wrap yourself in your cozy robe, brew some Ily coffee right in your room, or grab a cocktail down in the restaurant to wind down from the day.
Day 3: The Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain
Morning
Kickstart your last day of your getaway with breakfast at Timberlake’s Restaurant at Chetola Resort.
With stunning vistas overlooking Chetola Lake, Timberlake’s effortlessly blends rustic mountain charm with upscale dining.
Whether you opt for their legendary pancakes or a hearty mountain breakfast featuring local favorites, it’s the perfect way to fuel your morning adventures.
Fully energized, head over to the iconic Blowing Rock itself.
It’s not just a rock—it’s a legendary spot that promises awe-inspiring views and local lore of love, loss, and magic.
Accessible paths and entrances make it easy to comfortably soak in the gorgeous views while pondering the magical tales of love and mystery tied to this beloved landmark.
Midday
Lunch at Hellbender Bed & Beverage offers another taste of local hospitality with a casual yet refined menu (also created by the chef from Gideon Ridge!).
Fill your cravings with elevated comfort foods like their signature steak sandwich, unique shrimp and grits, or daily specials.
Paired with a refreshing cocktail or local brew, it’s the perfect midday pick-me-up.
Ready for another mountain adventure?
Get ready to take your vacation to new heights at the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain.
But don’t worry, you won’t have to climb a mountain to get to it!
Fully accessible with an elevator right in the gift shop, this historical bridge offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains without the strenuous hike. Yes, it sways slightly, and yes, the views are worth every wobble and momentary question about your life choices.
Evening

Wrap up your mountain getaway with small bites and wine at Grandfather Vineyard & Winery.
Stretching 5 miles, the winery sits beside a gently flowing river ideal for unwinding, reflecting, and savoring your last hours in the mountains.
Sip award-winning wines, sample local cheeses and charcuterie, and toast to a weekend well-spent.
Leaving Blowing Rock, take a moment to carry with you not just memories of stunning landscapes and incredible meals, but also the renewed sense that accessibility truly means embracing adventure exactly as you are.
Ready for your Weekend Reset?
The Blue Ridge Mountains have always been my go-to reset button—where chaos quiets, fresh air replaces inbox pings, and I’m reminded that rest isn’t a luxury—it’s survival. Blowing Rock just gets that. It’s not about flashy attractions or checking boxes.
It’s about creating space—literal and emotional—for everyone to breathe a little easier, move at their own pace, and feel like they belong. Whether you’re rolling, strolling, or running on caffeine and vibes, Blowing Rock meets you where you are and hands you a soft place to land.
So if you’re ready to swap burnout for bonfires and chaos for crisp mountain air, start by booking your room at The Embers today. It’s the perfect home base for your own stress-free, accessible (and actually enjoyable) weekend in Blowing Rock.
You bring the comfy clothes—I’ll bring the brutally honest tips. Let’s plan a trip that doesn’t just look good on Instagram, but actually feels good too.
