4 Must See Things to Do in North Alabama for Everyone
I casually dropped a pin on North Alabama in my travel map, hardly expecting more than a standard visit. Little did I know, that tiny digital pin was about to catapult it to the top of my “all-time favorite destinations” list. All this adventure started with a warm invitation from Visit North Alabama, and just like that, I was off to explore a place where the surprises are as big as the welcomes.
Alabama isn’t just about being accessible. It’s about making everyone feel right at home, no matter their walk of life they’re from or the wheels they roll in on.
Here, you can gaze up at a universe of stars at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center or let your voice echo through the ancient, awe-inspiring Cathedral Caverns. North Alabama isn’t just any travel destination.
From the thrill of zipping through treetops while spinning out of control at Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures to the exhilaration of finding a Bluey suitcase for my six year old (or me) at Unclaimed Baggage, Alabama has a way of turning every outing into a core memory.
These are my 5 favorite accessible things to do in North Alabama. Each one promises not just fun, but the kind of joy that comes from discovering the unexpected in the most inclusive ways.

Growing up in Florida, a visit to the Kennedy Space Center was practically a rite of passage—where my childhood was spent marveling at space shuttles and chomping on freeze-dried ice cream. I thought Kennedy had the monopoly on NASA magic—until I visited Huntsville, Alabama, affectionately known as “Rocket City” where it seems like everyone and their mom is a literal rocket scientist turned pastry chef.
Huntsville’s claim to fame? It is the powerhouse behind the rockets that first sent man to the moon.
The city still whispers tales of the past when the testing of Saturn V engines sent vibrations felt 90 miles away that turned this quiet town into NASA’s beating heart.
You can’t miss the towering Saturn V replica in front of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center when driving throughout Huntsville that just beckons your space loving heart.
When you visit and walk up to the entrance, don’t miss the quirky tribute to the right—an oft banana-topped gravestone honoring Miss Baker, the first U.S. animal to safely return from space.
What struck me the most was how inclusive the center is. With wide ramps and gentle inclines, it’s accessible for everyone, making space dreams a reality to every visitor.
Space Camp here is not just for kids; adults and families can also indulge in astronaut fantasies, with simulators and training exercises that mimic real-life astronaut experiences.
You better believe that will be happening soon!
And for the thrill-seekers, the center is filled with hands-on exhibits, simulators, and immersive experiences that propel you straight into the cosmos. Don’t skip the Saturn V Hall where you stand beneath the real Saturn V rocket that once soared through space.
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center deepened my love for space, proving it was more than just a childhood phase. Huntsville isn’t just another stop; it’s a gateway to the stars, where history, science, and dreams merge into one incredible adventure.

Subterranean Exploration at Cathedral Caverns
Caves have always been a thing for me. There’s something about vast passageways into mountains and beneath the ground with hidden alcoves and mysteries that is mystical and alluring. The tight spaces that emergency rescue teams couldn’t get in if they wanted to? Not so much.
Cathedral Caverns was originally named “Bat Cave” by the original owner, Jacob Gurley. Gurley had purchased the land around the cave and the cave itself in 1952 transforming it into a public tourist attraction in 1955.
Forget all that with Cathedral Caverns that has an entrance wide enough to drive 4 semi-trucks through side by side.
I was absolutely floored by the sight of it. Not only that, but Cathedral Caverns also has an accessible pathway all throughout the cave.
When I say accessible, it CAN be done. However, it may depend on the equipment you have. A powered wheelchair could make it up the steep inclines and declines throughout the cave. For someone with a manual wheelchair or prosthetic, it may be wise to ask about hitching a ride on the golf cart they use occasionally for tours.
The formations and beauty of this cave cannot be adequately captured in words. Cathedral Caverns is home to one of the largest stalagmites in the world, Goliath, measuring 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumference.
Of course the cave tour would be nothing without its witty and funny leader, Jonah. He made the experience one to remember with fun facts and jokes to be had for the full 90 minutes.
Just don’t tell him I was fighting the ADHD impulse to pocket one of the adorable Eastern Small-Footed Bats the entire time!

Treasure Hunting and Irony at Unclaimed Baggage
Back in 2023, I accidentally left my DJI Osmo Mobile 6 Gimbal aboard my Emirates Business Class flight from Athens, Greece to the U.S. I had literally just purchased this gimbal weeks prior to this trip to use in Greece with it costing a pretty penny. I called the Lost and Found for Emirates days later when I realized I didn’t have it only to be transferred to the Lost and Found for Athens airport.
Imagine my excitement when they said they found it and would send it back to me! Only to be followed by utter dismay when they quoted the shipping price to be more than the cost of the Gimbal itself. “Happy Birthday” is all I could say in resignation and stopped my efforts. I still don’t have a gimbal to this day out of sheer principle of not buying another.
My mission for Unclaimed Baggage? Find my gimbal.
Walking past the designer labels and racks and racks of clothing, I headed straight for the electronics section. Shiny object syndrome took over when I saw some cameras for just a fraction of the normal price begging to be bought. Then I spotted it – the damn gimbal staring me in the face right behind the counter. No way, there is absolutely no freaking way it’s the same one.
The employee handed it to me and gave me the timeline of when they received it, just a few short months after Happy Birthday. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the sheer irony of finding it once again only to have to repurchase the gimbal if I wanted to leave with it.
Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama (of all places) is where all the luggage, lost items, and soon to be cash in your pocket come for their final resting place.
The deals here are fantastic if only a bit bittersweet for how they got there.
Not a shopper? Head to the museum area where you can see the wild and crazy things that have been found in lost luggage.
- A full suit of armor? Check
- Hoggle from the Labyrinth? Check
- Shrunken heads? Check
How you could lose some of these items is beyond me. But hey, I have lost my cane, gimbal, and my mind. So who am I to talk?

Soaring Through the Trees at Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures
I know what you’re thinking. “How is ziplining an accessible activity?” Technically, it isn’t. But they will work with you to figure out if your mobility needs will work for zip lining.
As an amputee, I have been told for years that my love for zip lining can be no more. Why? Because the companies believe that somehow, my prosthetic will come off mid-zipping creating a liability issue from hell. What they don’t realize is that if my prosthetic comes off, my whole real leg will, too.
Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures took the time to ask the right questions necessary to learn more about my amputee situation to see if I would be a good fit for zip lining. After reassuring them that my leg won’t come off under any uncertain circumstances due to its pin and lock system, all plans were a go.
Not only did they open their doors pre-season just for me, but a whole crew was there to ensure everything went right with my experience.
The crew made my adventure and my day with their antics, humor, and care.
And when I say care, I mean they were personal shields against the frigid wind cutting through the trees and making me realize why it’s a seasonal operation.
Thanks to Screaming Eagle, I was able to feel alive again and experience my love of thrill-seeking activities once more regardless of my amputation. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Look, we both know planning a trip can spiral into chaos faster than you can say “lost luggage.” So, here’s my carefully curated (ahem, trial-and-error perfected) list of go-to resources. Clicking these links won’t cost you extra, but it might buy me a coffee—and let’s face it, we both know I run on caffeine and chaos.
1. Book Your Flights:
Skyscanner is my not-so-secret weapon for finding deals on flights that won’t require you to sell a kidney on the black market. It scans hundreds of airlines and websites globally, because who has time to individually stalk airline websites?
2. Find a Place to Sleep:
Booking.com has saved me from questionable hotel experiences more times than I’d like to admit. Massive selection, consistently solid prices, and fewer surprises of the “wait, this wasn’t on the brochure” variety.
3. Get a Rental Car:
Discover Cars and Expedia are my go-to’s. Always spring for full coverage—trust me, “it’ll be fine” never ends well especially when you are driving on the opposite side of the road the first time.
4. Find Tours & Experiences:
Viator and Get Your Guide help me dodge overpriced tourist traps while still providing the best things to do while traveling. Pro tip: check both because they often have different options depending on where you are—like a dating app, but for excursions.
5. Get Travel Insurance:
Coverage means peace of mind against canceled plans, lost stuff, medical snafus, or unexpected drama (injury, illness—been there, done that). My personal picks for insurance that won’t let you down are World Nomads (your go-to, all-around protection) or Safety Wing (perfect for globe-trotters and frequent flyers).
Go forth, plan wisely, and may your adventures be epic—and slightly less chaotic than mine.
