3 Day Alabama Itinerary: How to See the Best of Alabama
North Alabama is one of those destinations you never see coming—until suddenly, it’s stolen your heart.
From exploring the universe at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to zip-lining through the trees with Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures, digging through hidden treasures at Unclaimed Baggage, and discovering the surprising comfort of glamping (who knew I was secretly a glamper?), this corner of Alabama effortlessly combines adventure, charm, and accessibility.
But if it’s your first visit, figuring out how to fit all of these unique experiences into just three days can seem like a bit much.
That’s exactly why I’ve crafted this 3 Day Alabama Itinerary. It’s designed to help you make the most of your time, ensuring you hit all the best attractions, sample local favorites, and enjoy some unforgettable surprises—without losing your mind (or your luggage).

Start your Alabama trip right by beginning in its beating heart, Huntsville, also affectionately known as Rocket City. What does it have to do with rockets? Well, Huntsville is the home of where the rockets that put man on the moon were first developed!
Breakfast: Honest Coffee Roasters
For a great start to your day, stop at everyone’s favorite local downtown café, Honest Coffee Roasters.
Their locally roasted coffee and lattés are as unique as they are.
My personal favorite latté?
The Bees Knees combines the flavors of espresso, house-made salted honey syrup, and finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Pair this with one of their delicious açai bowls to keep you going all day long.
Explore the Unknown in the U.S. Space and Rocket Center
After you grab breakfast, check out the U.S. Space and Rocket Center for a day full of space exploration and history. Here, you’ll come face-to-face with one of only three Saturn V rockets left in the world that takes up an entire building—a genuinely awe-inspiring piece of space history.Â
Stop for lunch at the Galaxy Grill for a quick space-themed bite before exploring authentic lunar samples to feeling the rumble of rocket engines. Pro tip: Don’t ride any of the simulations after lunch or you’ll be seeing it a second time.
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center is the kind of immersive experience that leaves you marveling at human achievement and, let’s be honest, considering a career change to astronaut.
Dinner: Connor’s Steak & Seafood
Craving a fancy dinner with a southern flair? Head to Connor’s Steak and Seafood for an experience you won’t forget.
My personal favorite is the Boursin Filet with crispy tobacco onions on top.
Make sure you get your reservation days or a week in advance – they fill up fast!
Stroll around Downtown Huntsville
After savoring a delightful meal at Connors, take a leisurely stroll through Big Spring International Park in downtown Huntsville. This 12.5-acre urban oasis is centered around the “Big Spring,” the city’s original water source that attracted settlers over 200 years ago.
As you wander along the scenic paths, you’ll encounter the iconic red Japanese bridge and cherry trees, gifts from Japanese Major General Mikio Kimata, symbolizing international friendship. The park’s lagoon is home to friendly ducks, geese, and koi, making it a delightful spot for families and nature enthusiasts alike.
Stay: AC Hotel Downtown Huntsville
Relax and rejuvenate in the sensory sanctuary that is otherwise known as the AC Hotel in Downtown Huntsville. Did you know that the hotel has a sensory kit for guests who may need it during their stay, courtesy of the efforts of Tourism ALL-a-Bama?
You’ll leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated for your next full day of adventure!
Day 2: Outdoor Adventure in Woodville + Lake Guntersville State Park
Breakfast: AC Lounge at the AC Hotel Downtown Huntsville
Before checking out of the AC Hotel Huntsville Downtown, slow down with a Spanish themed breakfast at the AC Lounge to fuel up before a big day of adventure.
You honestly can’t go wrong with any of the meals fit for any craving.
Fly through the Trees with Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures
Didn’t think zip lining was an accessible activity? Think again!
Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures personally worked with me as an amputee to figure out my specific needs. Unlike other zip lining companies, they listened to the facts about my prosthesis learning that there is no way for it to come off mid-flight and become an issue.
Soon after that, I was flying through the trees and overcoming ropes courses in no time!
Lunch: La Esquina Cocina
Refuel at La Esquina Cocina with the best chips and guac this side of Alabama.
Comfort meets epic views of Lake Guntersville in their dining room that is equal parts stylish and sensory-friendly.
Glamping at ReTreet Resort and Spa nearby?
Make sure to order their signature secret drink – a new favorite I’ve been trying to replicate since!
Explore Beneath the Surface at Cathedral Caverns
There is something equally spooky and alluring about cave exploration. Having mobility differences can often be an obstacle when exploring caves, but not here! Cathedral Caverns is accessible with ramps and wide pathways throughout.Â
Pro tip: Unless you are exploring with a powered wheelchair, reserve one of their golf-cart led tours so you can ride the 1.5 mile round trip journey without worrying about pain or injury.
Make sure to look up and you may get to see one of the tiny bats that the cave was originally named after! Keep your impulses to grab one in check because their cuteness may overwhelm logic.
Dinner: Rock House Eatery
After a day of exploring North Alabama, treat yourself to a meal at Rock House Eatery in Guntersville.
This restaurant blends rustic elegance with a warm, welcoming atmosphere which is perfect after a long day of travel.
The Southern gourmet menu features a variety of dishes crafted from fresh, local ingredients, offering a delightful dining experience that captures the essence of Alabama.
Stay: ReTreet Resort & Spa
Love nature, but not fond of the bugs or the ever-changing weather?
Camp in style by glamping at ReTreet Resort & Spa with one of their themed tents or tiny homes!
My glamping tent, the Launch Pad, was space-themed and even adorned with a UFO lighting feature that brought it all together.
Body feeling all the aches and pains of travel?
Take advantage of the healing properties of the Nordic Cycle Station while you’re there.
From the sauna to the cold plunge to the cedar soaking station, your body will get the reset it needs.
Day 3: History and Fun Across North Alabama
Breakfast at ReTreet
There’s something about cooking breakfast and dining on your porch overlooking the forest while listening to the sounds of nature that is incredibly grounding.
Once you’re finished, snuggle up with a nice cup of coffee while the world is waking up.
But be warned, you may not want to leave this comforting, cozy retreat.
Historic Mooresville Walking Tour
Seeing historic buildings and architecture is fun, but what about an entire town steeped in Civil War stories and generational family tea?
Enter Mooresville, Alabama where each resident grabs their mail directly from the post office and where everyone knows your name. The best part? The mayor herself gave me the tour, despite the chilly day!
Lunch: The Salty Cod
Feeling overstimulated from travel?
Take a break at The Salty Cod in their sensory-friendly dining room (a private space removed from the main dining room) while eating the best fish and chips of your life!
With a passion for helping others and those in need, The Salty Cod hosts events like their sensory-friendly Christmas celebration for kids with sensory needs.
The amount of care and love in their food and for their community is enough to keep coming back for more!
Cook Museum of Natural Science
After fueling up from lunch, check out the Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur, Alabama. This is a playground for the curious, regardless of age.
Check out the interactive exhibits like the kinetic sand table, where you can sculpt landscapes and watch them transform before your eyes. Marvel at live animals, including baby alligators, turtles, and even a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.
Explore the dark caves, complete with stalactites and the sounds of dripping water, offering a taste of subterranean adventure. And don’t miss the 15,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, with every kind of fish you can imagine.
Whether you’re climbing through the massive tree exhibit or getting up close with moon jellyfish, the museum offers a hands-on journey into the wonders of the natural world.
Dinner: Phat Sammy’s
Finish your day strong with a stop at Phat Sammy’s, a quirky little slice of Hawaii right in the heart of Downtown Huntsville. This tropical gem doesn’t just lean into the island vibe—it cannonballs right into it, complete with Mai Tais served unapologetically out of a SPAM can (which doesn’t taste like it, thank goodness!).
Between the vibrant decor, eclectic menu (think Spam Fried Rice and kimchi-topped burgers), and cocktails that scream “vacation,” you’ll forget for a second that you’re still in Alabama. Trust me, it’s a deliciously offbeat experience that’s worth every amused glance from your table neighbors.
Stay: AC Hotel Downtown Huntsville
Wrap up your North Alabama adventure at the AC Hotel Downtown Huntsville, conveniently situated right where it all began.
Sleek but not stuffy, this hotel lets you sink into modern comforts without feeling like you need to whisper.
Bonus points for the rooftop bar, BarVista, where you can grab a cocktail, unwind, and get those last-minute Insta-worthy shots of Big Spring International Park and downtown Huntsville.
Perfect for relaxing, reminiscing, and mentally preparing for that return trip home.
Getting Around North Alabama
Getting around North Alabama is refreshingly doable—even more so if you’re navigating with accessibility needs in mind. Here’s what you really need to know:
Driving and Rental Cars
Renting a car is definitely your best bet for flexibility. The roads are well-maintained, and parking is usually straightforward—even in popular spots like Huntsville. Several rental agencies offer accessible vehicles, but make sure you request these in advance.
Public Transportation
While Huntsville does offer the Orbit bus system, it’s important to note that accessible routes are primarily within city limits. Wheelchair-accessible buses are available, and the Orbit service also caters to sensory needs by providing clear route maps and timetables online.
For rural areas, services like Madison County’s TRAM are available but require scheduling ahead—call at least 24-48 hours in advance.
Rideshare & Taxi Services
Uber WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) and Lyft WAV are accessible around major cities, but finding wheelchair-accessible vehicles in more rural areas can be hit-or-miss. This is why I always suggest renting an accessible vehicle to avoid any issues during your trip.
Pedestrian and Mobility Considerations
Downtown Huntsville and many local attractions are increasingly wheelchair-friendly, with ramps, clearly marked crosswalks, and smooth sidewalks. Still, Alabama’s charm sometimes includes historic cobblestone paths—beautiful, yes, but occasionally bumpy.
Plan accordingly and maybe pack your favorite suspension-equipped wheelchair or mobility aid.
Tips for Visiting Alabama
Exploring Alabama with mobility or sensory considerations? Here’s how to make your visit comfortable, fun, and stress-free:
Be Prepared for the Weather
Alabama’s summers are hot—really hot—and humidity levels can be intense. If you’re heat-sensitive, plan outings in early mornings or late evenings and prioritize indoor or shaded attractions during midday.
Keep hydration and cooling packs handy, because sweating buckets doesn’t exactly scream “relaxing vacation.
Sensory-Friendly Planning
Crowds and noise can get overwhelming, especially in peak travel seasons. Attractions like the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and Cook Museum of Natural Science are best first thing in the morning or during the week for avoiding crowds. Bring ear defenders or noise-canceling headphones for busy environments.
Book Ahead and Communicate Clearly
Accessible hotel rooms, rental equipment, and attraction accommodations can book up fast. Be specific when requesting accommodations—clarity is key. Don’t feel awkward repeating your needs; trust me, clarity saves hassle later.
Engage With Locals
Alabama locals are genuinely friendly and eager to help. Need recommendations for accessible dining, shopping, or activities? Don’t hesitate to ask—chances are, you’ll leave with new friends (and maybe even insider tips on quieter spots).
Navigating North Alabama with mobility or sensory needs is a breeze with their recent accessibility and sensory-friendly efforts. With the right tools and tips, you’re set for a surprisingly accessible adventure!

Look, we both know planning a trip can spiral into chaos faster than you can say “lost luggage.” So, here’s my carefully curated (ahem, trial-and-error perfected) list of go-to resources. Clicking these links won’t cost you extra, but it might buy me a coffee—and let’s face it, we both know I run on caffeine and chaos.
1. Book Your Flights:
Skyscanner is my not-so-secret weapon for finding deals on flights that won’t require you to sell a kidney on the black market. It scans hundreds of airlines and websites globally, because who has time to individually stalk airline websites?
2. Find a Place to Sleep:
Booking.com has saved me from questionable hotel experiences more times than I’d like to admit. Massive selection, consistently solid prices, and fewer surprises of the “wait, this wasn’t on the brochure” variety.
3. Get a Rental Car:
Discover Cars and Expedia are my go-to’s. Always spring for full coverage—trust me, “it’ll be fine” never ends well especially when you are driving on the opposite side of the road the first time.
4. Find Tours & Experiences:
Viator and Get Your Guide help me dodge overpriced tourist traps while still providing the best things to do while traveling. Pro tip: check both because they often have different options depending on where you are—like a dating app, but for excursions.
5. Get Travel Insurance:
Coverage means peace of mind against canceled plans, lost stuff, medical snafus, or unexpected drama (injury, illness—been there, done that). My personal picks for insurance that won’t let you down are World Nomads (your go-to, all-around protection) or Safety Wing (perfect for globe-trotters and frequent flyers).
Go forth, plan wisely, and may your adventures be epic—and slightly less chaotic than mine.
