Royal Hawaiian Hotel Review: Is It Worth it for Families?
Let’s be honest: the Royal Hawaiian Hotel had me at “pink palace” but the immense history of it is what locked my husband in. Location and reputation mattered, sure, but the Barbie-dream aesthetic sealed the deal.
Traveling with a six-year-old means luxury needs a side of kid-friendly—or at least enough muffins to distract from inevitable meltdowns.
Luxury vacations with kids are usually a myth, right up there with “sleeping in on weekends.” But was this historic gem genuinely family-friendly, or just another pretty facade destined to be stress-tested by a tiny chaos creator?
Spoiler: There was rest, there was play, and yes, I even relaxed a bit. Read on to see the exact reasons why I thought the splurge was worth it in my detailed Royal Hawaiian Hotel review.

Picking a 5-star hotel with a kid in tow isn’t exactly a stroll down Waikiki Beach. Honestly, I was wondering if Hawaii was worth visiting the first time I went, but after I knew I had to bring my family along.
After digging through endless reviews and dodging the usual tourist traps, we settled on the iconic “Pink Palace of the Pacific” because it promised real luxury without the usual “kids not welcome” vibe.
With spacious garden-view rooms, quiet spots away from the hustle, kid-friendly pools, and even free bakery treats for our little one, this place ticked all the boxes. It’s that rare mix of historic charm and modern comfort that actually makes traveling with family easier—not just prettier for the ‘gram.
If you’re trying to figure out the best Hawaiian island for kids, I’m obviously biased toward Oahu—but trust me, I’ve done enough digging and talked to enough parents online to back it up.
What We Considered First
Pre-trip research involved a lot of overly skeptical checklist-making:
- Kid Tolerance: Would the staff welcome endless questions or subtly suggest we reconsider our choices?
- Vibe: Was this historic hotel charming or pretentious? (Spoiler: Surprisingly chill.)
- Location: Could we take a short stroll from the sand to the sea without needing an Uber?
- Accessibility: Would my bad ankle and our stroller be seamless fits, or would doorways become my nemesis?
Arrival + First Impressions: Pretty, Polite, or a Pile-Up?
Arriving after a morning checking out of the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Resort in Kapolei with a small child rushing to get to Waikiki for an all-day tattoo appointment is essentially competing in an Olympic sport.
The staff greeted us warmly with kukui nut leis and smiles the moment we stepped out of our car into the foyer of The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The lobby’s signature fragrance of Tahitian Gardenia immediately made us feel relaxed and ready for some Hawaiian adventures of the day.
- Staff: Friendly, even to tiny humans who ask questions every 14 seconds.
- Sensory Notes: Pleasantly dim lighting, calming lobby hum—enough to soothe without causing sensory overload.

Our Room: Family-Friendly or Just… Fancy?
We booked a garden-view queen and were upgraded to the top-floor version, which is exactly the kind of surprise you need after surviving an airport with a six-year-old.
The space easily accommodated an army of stuffed animals, a small arsenal of kid gear, and everything we had already gathered the 4 days prior while we were in Oahu.
Storage consisted of a few drawers and a closet; the blackout curtains worked so well my child thought we’d teleported into a cave.

The Bathroom:
Good for Bathtime Battles?
✅ Walk-in shower? Check.
✅ Door that made it impossible to get in and out of the bathroom unscathed? Also check.
✅ Counter space barely enough for toothpaste wars, and faucet positioned inconveniently high for tiny hands.?Check.
✅ Accessible? Sort of, if you overlook missing safety rails and lower-height features.
Good looks, questionable practicality.
The View & Grounds: Scenic and Stroll-able

Our window overlooked the Queen’s Gardens which were so lush and green that they seemed unreal.
Navigating the even pathways with my destroyed ankle and a stroller were a breeze, a welcome change from our usual travel obstacles.
Food + Drinks: Family-Approved or Overpriced Meh?

Since I am a Marriott Bonvoy Gold Member through the Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card, breakfast at The Royal Hawaiian Bakery was covered with 4 complimentary items:
- 3 of their famous banana nut muffins
- along with a chocolate croissant for the little one.
Add in the open-air seating with a view of the gardens and kona coffee made it truly feel like breakfast in paradise.
Another morning, the little one and I decided to head to Surf Lanai for breakfast and their famous pink pancakes! I was a little disappointed that they did not have a kid’s option or menu; so, my wallet and pride just accepted the fact that she would likely eat two bites and be done.
While their pink pancakes, nova lox bagel, and the view were unparalleled, the price tag was hefty and was a one and done for us.
Pool + Beach: Fun for Kids or Just Hot and Crowded?

The Malulani Pool was serene—great for quiet, adult relaxation but not so great for splashy toddler antics.
Located in the center of the Queen’s Gardens, this pool features a stunning view of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach with its crystal-blue waters.
Perfect for lounging in the sun or taking a relaxing dip, this pool is more for relaxation and adults than those who want to actively swim or play.

Fortunately, staying at the Royal Hawaiian includes entrance to the Sheraton’s Helumoa Playground next door, which had slides and fountains to satisfy the tiny tyrant.
Her favorite part was doing cannonballs into the pool much to the dismay of the sunbathers nearby.
It is much more family friendly with its two freshwater swimming pools, water slides, interactive fountain area for the kids, and water chase lounges.
Don’t forget to pick up a Hawaiian Honey Cone while you’re there!
What’s There to Do?

Since I was enduring an 11-14 hour tattoo session for three days, my husband had to get creative with the different things to keep our six year-old from climbing the walls.
Thankfully, the hotel came to the rescue with a lei-making class for the day!
While there were initially some snafus with logistics on age and parental supervision (both covered with my husband being there with her), the little one set out to make an assortment of lei hair decorations, bracelets, and more which she was more than excited to show me at the end of the day.
Other activities at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel included in your stay:
- Hula lessons,
- Morning yoga,
- Introductory stand-up paddleboarding lessons for the whole family,
- Historical tour,
- Aqua Zumba, and even
- Storytelling about the Hawaiian Culture, Ocean, Native Preservation as well as The History of The Royal Hawaiian from our Local Tutu’s as they share stories and experiences from the past.
Sadly missing: a proper kids’ club or play area. However, entertainment isn’t completely lacking with the beach steps away or your ability to hit up the Royal Hawaiian Center next door!
The Location: Prime Waikiki or Too Close to the Chaos?
Easy walks to ice cream, street festivals, and shopping at the Royal Hawaiian Center, made this part of our trip easy, allowing for easy stops in and out of the hotel for rest, naps, or even just escaping the island sun.
Nighttime safety is decent, but as always stay vigilant due to crowds. When I originally visited on a solo trip to Oahu for my first tattoo session, I felt completely safe walking around Downtown Waikiki even in my ultra-sore state.
Accessibility is mostly great, minus occasional sandy slopes or crowds. For wheelchair access in Waikiki Beach, mobimats are located:
- Just past the Waikiki police station for quality and distance you’re able to travel
- At the Sans Souci beach much further down from the police station for a quieter beach experience with a similar beach mat.
If you need to rent a beach wheelchair, make sure to check Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation website for details. I highly recommend calling the day prior to find out the exact details you need for renting one as they are first-come, first-serve.
Family Wins: What Actually Worked
- The staff treated us like humans, including the smallest one even interacting with her so she didn’t feel excluded.
- Surprisingly easy stroller and mobility navigation.
- Bakery treats at the Royal Hawaiian Bakery within the hotel to stave off hangry tantrums.
- Pool choices to balance adult sanity and kid fun.
Family Fails: What Didn’t Work for Us
- Bathroom accessibility and size felt incomplete causing us to struggle during post-beach and nightly showers.
- No dedicated kids’ play space.
- Kid-friendly food menus were not a thing at each of their onsite restaurants.
What We’d Do Differently Next Time
- Pack our own kid-friendly snacks and mini-meals.
- Skip yoga, double down on storytime.
- Request a quieter, elevator-distanced room for nap preservation.
Accessibility Notes (From a Disabled Parent’s POV)
Mobility infrastructure was pretty good overall with even, wide pathways, ramps, and elevators throughout. The bathroom in our historic room was an issue with size and navigation even for an able-bodied person like my husband.
The lobby and spaces throughout the hotel were sensory-friendly with low noise and lighting, though dining could get noisy. The only time the lobby was loud was during their Chinese New Year Celebration which was freaking amazing which made it worth it.
Final Verdict: Is the Royal Hawaiian Actually Worth It for Families with Young Kids?
If your dream trip includes luxe nostalgia with unique and fun kid-friendly activities and pool access, yes. If you need impeccable accessibility or extensive kids’ entertainment, you might reconsider.
Overall, worth it if you’re prepared for occasional hiccups which are par for the course traveling with kids regardless. There is so many things to do in Oahu for kids and families alike to keep everyone happy with the Royal Hawaiian Hotel central to everything you need!
TL;DR: Go for the splurge, but pack extra patience. Book your stay at the Royal Hawaiian hotel today!
