LoveYourBrain: Finding Hope and Healing After Brain Injury

When I first heard about LoveYourBrain, I knew it was something special. For anyone living with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the journey to recovery can feel overwhelming and isolating. LoveYourBrain brings a sense of community, hope, and healing to those of us navigating life after a TBI.

If you or someone you love is dealing with a brain injury, this incredible organization could make all the difference.

Importance of supporting individuals with TBI

Isolation is one of the most devastating stark realities of individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Personally, I lost nearly everyone save for my kids due to my brain injury. That’s not to say that they’re not physically around anymore, but it’s not the same.

Personality changes, memory issues, and communication lead to the devastating effects of isolation for me like abuse at my caregivers hands, depression, and suicidal ideation.

But isolation is just one of the many, many things that often go hand-in-hand with brain injury. Unemployment / job loss and failed relationships are part of it too. I tried going back to my work while in a wheelchair and barely functioning due to needing to change my situation.

But less than a year later, I realized I could no longer work in the psychology field due to my memory issues any longer. Cue 4 more tries at different jobs where I was ostracized, made fun of, and isolated because of my memory issues (which I had ways around) and leg pain.

My day to day turned into a fight for survival and going through the motions, but sinking further and further into myself. Justin, my husband, was my only saving grace. Having met me after my accident, he never had anything to compare my new me to. He loved me for me, imperfections and all. Without him, I honestly don’t know if I would have made it.

THAT is why it’s so important that those affected by brain injury have someone who will throw them a rope when the rest of the world is like Rose who let poor Jack die because she wouldn’t allow him room on the door.

My Personal Experience with a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

Life after a severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) caused by my near-death accident in 2016 has not been the smoothest sailing. My doctors were so concerned with saving my life and then ultimately my leg (because Christmas?).

They never took the time to properly address my brain injury including my reset back to a 4 year old’s brain for two months, speech issues, cognitive issues, and severe memory issues.

A whole three years and 8 surgeries on my leg later, I decided it was time to see how I was affected. Taking a neuropsychological test was a blessing that truly showed me how much it really changed everything.

With healthcare in the US being as terrible as it is, there is no covered rehabilitation for survivors of brain injury besides the bare minimum of being able to do the normal daily things that are covered in occupational therapy like hygiene and caring for yourself.

That’s where LoveYourBrain (LYB) comes in. A whole 8 years later after some random internet searching on my brain injury, I discovered the LYB foundation who seeks to fill the gap left by our healthcare system for those who have obtained a brain injury.

What Is LoveYourBrain?

LoveYourBrain is a nonprofit founded by brothers Kevin and Adam Pearce after Kevin sustained a life-altering TBI while training for the Olympics in 2009. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to improve the quality of life for people affected by brain injury.

They achieve this through mindfulness, yoga, and community-based programs designed to foster healing and connection.

The Crash Reel

Why It Works

LoveYourBrain isn’t just a yoga program; it’s a lifeline.

Here’s why:

1. Community First

The program creates a space where you’re surrounded by people who truly “get it.” Whether it’s fellow participants or the instructors, you’ll feel understood and supported.

2. Focus on Mindfulness

For those of us with TBIs, managing stress and finding balance can be a challenge. LoveYourBrain teaches tools that make mindfulness a part of daily life.

3. Holistic Healing

The combination of yoga, meditation, and community helps address the physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of recovery.

Core Programs and Initiatives

LYB offers a variety of programs designed to support brain injury survivors and their families through yoga, mindfulness, and retreats. But these aren’t just your average yoga classes or getaways—they’re designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can participate and benefit.

1. Mindset / Mindfulness Programs

Courses, like their 9-week Mindfulness for Brain Injury, facilitate training your mind-and even rewiring your brain-for better focus, emotional health, and mental clarity. You can explore a progression of topics to create a life-changing meditation practice to shift your mindset and your life!

2. LoveYourBrain Yoga

The yoga programs offered by LYB are grounded in research and available on-demand, allowing anyone affected by brain injury to access tools that promote focus, kindness, rest, and a deeper connection with themselves and others.

My personal favorite is their Yoga Nidra, also known as “yogic sleep”. It is a guided meditation that brings you to a state between wakefulness and sleep, allowing deep relaxation and mental clarity. It’s perfect for reducing stress, improving sleep, and promoting emotional healing. I have always had problems either falling asleep or staying asleep since my accident, but this made it so I could actually sleep through the night.

3. Community Retreats

Over five days, survivors of brain injuries and their caregivers (if applicable) experience the incredible benefits of mindfulness, movement, nutrition, art, and building a supportive community—all backed by science. In a space filled with trust, vulnerability, and a true sense of belonging, discover what it really means to love your brain.

Beyond these core programs, LYB also focuses on education and building a supportive community. They offer workshops, resources, and online content aimed at increasing awareness about TBIs and the importance of brain health.

By fostering a community where survivors and their families feel understood and supported, the foundation contributes to holistic healing and mental wellness on a deeper level.

Honestly, I have never encountered or even heard of another entity like LoveYourBrain that helps brain injury survivors in this way. Like I said previously, the resources are just not there unless you want to be spending tens or even hundreds of thousands out of pocket.
