“…The wind blows a little bit colder
And we’re all getting older
And the clouds are moving on with every autumn breeze”
Yes, it’s a Disney reference (to which I have many)—chalk it up to having kids who’ve put it on repeat for the past four years. But the idea holds true; September marks the dawn of Fall, captivating all five senses.
Your eyes are drawn to trees transforming into vivid canvases of orange, yellow, and red. Your ears notice the delicate crunch of leaves underfoot. Your skin welcomes the crisp air, and the comforting scent of evening fires fills the atmosphere. The flavors of fall delight your taste buds in that first sip of a Pumpkin Spice Latte (this girl has some basic tendencies, lol).
In both our environment and our inner selves, this sensory shift carries a deeper message of embracing change and that change is inevitable. September isn’t just a change in weather; it’s a reminder that transformation is not merely inevitable, but absolutely essential for growth. As the world around us prepares for a new season, we’re prompted to reflect on our own changes—those we’ve undergone and those still to come.

The Season of Turning Leaves: Embracing Change
The Beauty of Nature’s Palette
September unfolds like a painter’s dream, where every tree becomes a brushstroke in a living masterpiece of warm hues. Gone are the uniform greens of summer, replaced now by a mesmerizing tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows that set the landscape ablaze. It’s as if nature herself has decided to put on her most captivating show, reminding us all that change can be both beautiful and profoundly inspiring.
Leaves as Life’s Metaphor
The changing leaves are more than just a visual spectacle; they’re nature’s most poetic metaphor for embracing change. Just like those leaves shift from one color to another, we too can undergo transformations that enrich our character and deepen our experience of life. The tree has to let go of its leaves to make way for new growth, reminding us that sometimes we must release the old to welcome the new—whether it’s outdated beliefs, past hurts, or even former versions of ourselves.
The Transformation Within
The Internal Seasons
These personal shifts might not be as visually evident as the leaves of autumn, but they’re just as significant, shaping our character, learning, goals, and the paths we choose to take. So as the world around us transforms, let’s use this period as a nudge to check in with ourselves, reflecting on the changes we’ve undergone and to be open to the transformations still waiting to unfold.
My Personal September Story
Speaking from experience, September has always been a pivotal month for embracing change, both big and small, positive and negative. One of the most memorable September changes I’ve witnessed in the past decade was this year when I had to send my oldest off to high school. What a transformation that was! She went from being an awkward middle schooler to a gorgeous young lady who has now outgrown me—literally, she’s taller!
This September transition was not just about her; it was a transformative moment for me as well. I had to come to terms with the fact that my little girl was growing up and embracing change in a new chapter in her life. It also made me realize how quickly time flies and how important it is to be present in these fleeting moments. So, just as the seasons change, so too do our roles , our relationships, and our understanding of the world—and ourselves—around us.

Embracing Change Through Travel
Why Travel is the Real Deal for Personal Change
Look, if you’re wanting to change things up a bit, hitting the road is your best bet. The minute you leave your zip code, you’re basically giving yourself permission to be changed, find adventure, and maybe even remade. It’s like September, right? The air gets cooler, leaves shift colors, and something inside you says it’s time for embracing change.
Travel is powerful – it does the same thing but in a bigger way. You’re not just switching from iced coffee to pumpkin spice; you’re diving into new cultures, possibly picking up a few words in another language, learning a new point of view, and seeing firsthand how incredibly big and diverse this world really is.
Ways to Embrace Change this September
Stoked to start this journey of transformation? September’s as good a time as any, and here’s how you can get the ball rolling.
- Why Are You Going? Think about it. Before you start looking at plane tickets or Airbnb spots, why do you actually want to go? Is it to break free from routine, to learn something new, or maybe even to find a part of yourself you didn’t know was missing? Knowing your ‘why’ sets the whole vibe for your trip.
- Be Green: September’s all about appreciating nature’s changes, so let’s not ruin it, okay? Look for places to stay that care about the planet as much as you do. Support a business that work to support the local economy. Even better if you can get there by public transport. If you don’t know what sustainable travel is – we have an entire article about it!
- Skip the Touristy Stuff: Yeah, the Eiffel Tower is cool and all, but what about that small lakeside town you’ve never heard of? Trust me, the hidden gems often teach you more than the guidebook sights.
- Lend a Helping Hand: Volunteer during your travels, as acts of kindness can catalyze profound changes in both you and the communities you visit.
- Keep a Diary, or Don’t: Jot down some thoughts, snap some photos, or just keep it all in the noggin. The point is to make the experience yours, and how you remember it should be too. Just make sure to connect with the moment instead of getting all the cool Instagram shots.
Practical Travel Tips for September
As we learning to embrace change and the transformative power of travel this September, it’s essential to be mindful—not just of our personal journey but also of our tangible footprint. How we prepare and make choices matters.
Weather-Related Tips
September weather can be unpredictable. One moment you’re basking in the warmth of summer’s last rays; the next, a cool autumn breeze reminds you of the season’s impending change. For this reason, layers are your friend. Include versatile clothing items like t-shirts and light sweaters, and a quality jacket for those cooler moments. A good pair of hiking boots is advisable, especially if you intend to connect with nature on your trip. Remember, checking the local weather before heading out isn’t just practical; it allows you to be present, immersing yourself fully in each moment without distraction.
Eco-Friendly Choices
Travel enriches our lives, yet it’s crucial that it doesn’t impoverish the planet. Consider staying at accommodations committed to sustainability—those that use renewable energy sources or have a comprehensive recycling program. For transportation, think beyond the typical car rental. Could this be an opportunity to use public transit, or perhaps even a bike for closer destinations? If you’re hiking, respect the environment by staying on designated paths. These may seem like small choices, but they resonate in meaningful ways, not just enhancing your travel experience but also contributing to a more conscious, sustainable world.
In all that you do, may this September’s journeys deepen your connection to both yourself and the world around you. Safe travels.
The Cultural Significance of September
Global Perspectives
In various cultures, September holds a unique place, though it may not universally signify transformation. For example, in the Jewish lunar calendar, the High Holidays could fall in September or October, serving as a period of introspection and atonement. Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere is gearing up to welcome spring, offering its own version of renewal. While the concept of September as a transformative month isn’t a global standard, it does offer different shades of meaning depending on where you are in the world, highlighting the diverse ways people experience this time of year.

Yes! We absolutely need to take care of it for ourselves and future generations to come.
Interesting blog post! I have always loved the month of September and fall in general as the best time to travel. Yes, it is lovely to see fall colors. Apart from it, the weather itself turns from being not so hot to getting a bit colder as November approaches. Traveling in general broadens your outlook, makes you flexible to other ways of behaviour, culture and learning new things in life.
I absolutely agree! I can’t do heat (I actually get hives!). So the non-summer months are the only way for me to travel. And I love that about travel. I see the change firsthand with my kids who go into a trip and come out of it different every time!
I have always looked to September as a new beginning. It harkens back to school days I am sure. As the Fall colours arrive it is always a good signal of change for me. And it is often the time we head out travelling to explore. So a time that is always anticipated.
The colors though – I can’t wait to see them for the first time in October!
This was a very interesting read. September is my favourite month to travel 🙂
